Hot Fingers

Mar 08

#2 in the “When Is This Winter Going To End?!” series is a crocheted Hot Fingers pot holder to grab hot things, like a mug from the microwave or a hot pan handle on the stove.

It's a little more complicated than the bookmark, but still really easy. It is done in three pieces then connected to make the pot holder.

You need to know the following stitches: If you need any help with these stitches, I am including links to You Tube videos that should help. Learn To Crochet Part 1 and Part 2. These first videos do a great job of teaching the basic techniques and stitches, like chain and single crochet. For the magic ring, this video was very helpful to me.

  • Chain
  • Magic ring
  • Single crochet
  • Half double crochet
  • Slip stitch

I used Lilly's Sugar & Cream cotton yarn with a size H hook. You can use just about any yarn you want, just change to an appropriate size hook.

Abbreviations used:

  • Ch chain
  • sc single crochet
  • hdc half double crochet
  • sl st slip stitch

BASE: Work the base in the round.

Chain 17

sc in second ch from hook, sc 15 until the last ch. in last ch, 3 sc. This will take you around to the other side of the chain.

Working back up the chain on the opposite side you just worked, sc 14. 3 sc in end stitch. Ch 1.

1 hdc in the next 14 sc. 2 hdc in the next 3 sc. Ch 1

1 hdc in the next 14 hdc. *1 hdc, 2 hdc* repeat ** 3 times

Pocket 1

Half Circle:

Make a magic ring. 3 hdc inside ring. Ch 2. Pull the ring to make the hdc in a row. Do not pull to make a circle. You might have to adjust the placement of the stitches on the ring.

Turn. 2 hdc in each hdc. Ch 2. Pull magic ring tight.

Turn. *1 hdc, 2 hdc* repeat ** 3 times. Ch 2

Turn. *1 hdc, 2 hdc* repeat ** 3 times. 1 hdc. Ch 2

Turn. *1 hdc, 1 hdc, 2 hdc*, repeat 3 more times, 1 hdc, ch 2, turn

Row 1: 1 hdc in each stitch across bottom of half circle, ch 2, turn

Row 2-7: 1 hdc in each stitch, ch 2, turn

Row 8: 1 sc in each stitch across,

cut off working yarn, leaving about a 5-6 inch tail. Pull through loop on hook and tighten. Weave in end.

Pocket 2:

Half Circle:

Make the half circle exactly like Pocket 1

The base is created the same way as Pocket 1. Except there are only 3 rows of hdc and 1 row of sc.

Lay the pocket pieces on each end of the base, matching up the edges. I but two stitches on each corner of the pockets to give them a little extra strength. You can attach the pockets to the base one of two ways.

  1. Sew them together or
  2. Single crochet around the edge of the entire pot holder, being sure to include both base and pocket. This is the method I prefer. I like the looks better. But either method works just fine.

Next up: a really simple bookmark.
